Hyundai Santa Fe (TM): Cylinder Head Assembly / CVVT & Camshaft. Repair procedures

Removal
  
Be careful not to damage the parts located under the vehicle (floor under cover, fuel filter, fuel tank and canister) when raising the vehicle using the lift.
(Refer to General Information - "Lift and Support Points")
CVVT & Cam Shaft
1.
Remove the timing chain.
(Refer to Timing System - "Timing Chain")
2.
Remove the oil control valve (OCV) and center bolt (A).

To prevent impurities from entering exhaust oil control valve (OCV) & center bolt, wear rubber gloves.
When removing the exhaust oil control valve (OCV) and center bolt, hold the hexagonal portion (A) on the camshaft with a wrench to prevent the camshaft from rotating.

3.
Remove the intake CVVT (A).

4.
Remove the exhaust CVVT (A).

5.
Remove the camshaft front bearing cap (A) and camshaft bearing caps (B).

6.
Remove the camshaft (A).

CVVT & Cam Shaft Assembly
1.
Remove the timing chain.
(Refer to Timing System - "Timing Chain")
2.
Remove the camshaft front bearing cap (A) and camshaft bearing caps (B).

3.
Remove the intake camshaft & CVVT assembly (A).

4.
Remove the exhaust camshaft & CVVT assembly (A).

Inspection
Camshaft
1.
Inspect the cam lobes.
Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height.
Cam height
Intake : 39.7 - 39.9 mm (1.5630 - 1.5709 in.)
Exhaust : 37.9 - 38.1 mm(1.4921 - 1.5000 in.)

If the cam lobe height is less than standard, replace the camshaft.
2.
Inspect the camshaft journal clearance.
(1)
Clean the bearing caps and camshaft journals.
(2)
Place the camshafts on the cylinder head.
(3)
Lay a strip of plastigage across each of the camshaft journal.

(4)
Install the bearing caps.
  
Do not turn the camshaft.
(5)
Remove the bearing caps.
(6)
Measure the plastigage at its widest point.
Bearing oil clearance
Intake :
NO.1 : 0.037 - 0.065mm (0.00146 - 0.00256 in)
NO.2,3,4,5 : 0.037 - 0.067mm (0.00146 - 0.00264 in)
Exhaust:
NO.1: 0.037 - 0.065mm (0.00146 - 0.00256 in)
NO.2,3,4,5 : 0.037 - 0.067mm (0.00146 - 0.00264 in)

If the oil clearance is greater than maximum, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace cylinder head.
(7)
Completely remove the plastigage.
(8)
Remove the camshafts.
3.
Inspect the camshaft end play.
(1)
Install the camshafts.
(2)
Using a dial indicator, measure the end play while moving the camshaft back and forth.
Camshaft end play
0.09 - 0.23 mm (0.00354 - 0.00091 in.)

If the end play is greater than maximum, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace cylinder head.
(3)
Remove the camshafts.
Installation
CVVT & Cam Shaft
1.
Install the camshaft (A).

2.
Install the camshaft front bearing cap (A) and camshaft bearing caps (B).

  
When installing the camshaft front bearing cap and camshaft bearing caps, tighten the bolts and nuts with pre-torque first, and then tighten the bolts and nuts with specified torque in the sequence shown.
Tightening torque :
Step 1
M8 Bolts : 9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb-ft)
M6 Bolts : 4.9 - 7.8 N.m (0.5 - 0.8 kgf.m, 3.6 - 5.8 Ib-ft)
Step 2
M8 Bolts : 18.6 - 22.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.3 kgf.m, 13.7 - 16.6 lb-ft)
M6 Bolts : 11.8 - 13.7 N.m (1.2 - 1.4 kgf.m, 8.7 - 10.1 lb-ft)

3.
Install the exhaust CVVT (A).

4.
Install the intake CVVT (A).

5.
Install the oil control valve (OCV) and center bolt (A).
Tightening torque :
27.4 - 31.3 N.m (2.8 - 3.2 kgf.m, 20.2 - 23.1 IB-ft) + 30°

6.
Install the timing chain.
(Refer to Timing System - "Timing Chain")

Install the exhaust camshaft & CVVT assembly (A).

Install the intake camshaft & CVVT assembly (A).

3.
Install the camshaft front bearing cap (A) and camshaft bearing caps (B).

  
When installing the camshaft front bearing cap and camshaft bearing caps, tighten the bolts and nuts with pre-torque first, and then tighten the bolts and nuts with specified torque in the sequence shown.
Tightening torque :
Step 1
M8 Bolts : 9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb-ft)
M6 Bolts : 4.9 - 7.8 N.m (0.5 - 0.8 kgf.m, 3.6 - 5.8 Ib-ft)
Step 2
M8 Bolts : 18.6 - 22.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.3 kgf.m, 13.7 - 16.6 lb-ft)
M6 Bolts : 11.8 - 13.7 N.m (1.2 - 1.4 kgf.m, 8.7 - 10.1 lb-ft)

4.
Install the timing chain.
(Refer to Timing System - "Timing Chain")

    Description Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the valve timing of the intake and exhaust valve in accordance with the ECM control signal which is calculated by the engine speed and load.
